Junior tennis. 2017 was a very successful season with our U14 boys winning Division 5 of the Belfast and District Junior Leagues (the photo shows some members of the squad with their medals). Our junior programme is very ably run by Michael Heaslip and his excellent team. For details please see

HBTC Makes The Mark

Helen's Bay Tennis Club has become the 15th club in Northern Ireland to successfully achieve Ulster Tennis Clubmark Accreditation. On Saturday 25 November George Stevenson, President of Ulster Branch of Tennis Ireland, handed over the Clubmark certificate and banner to Club chairman, Stephen Leach, at an afternoon of tennis and tea attended by junior and adult members along with Alderman Marion Smith. Lauren Smythe, Ulster Branch Development Manager, is also shown with Stephen Leach, club juniors, the certificate and banner.
Stephen said HBTC 'has been championing tennis in the local community for over 55 years; and last season - under Michael Heaslip, our Head of Junior Development - over 100 children and young people were coached at the Club..... The process of seeking accreditation  has given us a valuable opportunity to review and update our activities and policies to confirm that these are in line with best practice.... Having now achieved Clubmark accreditation we believe we will be better placed to apply to Ards and North Down Council (who own the Club's facilities) and other funds for support in resurfacing the courts and making other improvements, so that we can promote tennis to people of all ages and abilities.'
Robin Masefield, Club President, also welcomed the Clubmark award and said, 'Helen's Bay is one of 5 tennis clubs which have formed a strategic partnership to work with each other and Ards and North Down Council to support the development of tennis over the next 5 years.... We in Helen's Bay hope to use [Clubmark accreditation] as a platform to make our full contribution to increasing participation in tennis right across Ards and North Down.'
Lauren Smythe, UBTI Development Manager, said: ' Congratulations to Helen's Bay on their Clubmark success.... It includes developing a varied club-based outreach programme to increase participation in tennis across all sectors of the community and also promoting tennis as a healthy sport for life for all. HBTC already has a good introductory coaching programme to integrate local beginner adult players into the Club and .... is now very well positioned to further develop tennis outreach and retention programmes for all ages and abilities and to grow its membership.'
(Pictures) George Stephenson was also able to present medallions to members of the U14 boys team who won Division 5 of the Junior Ulster Leagues earlier this year. Congratulations to team members Ben Woods, Jake and Rory Chada, Nathan Beattie and Leo Graham (Louis McCartney and Jack McIlduff, also members of the team were not able to be present.)

Annual Parent & Child Comp 2017

The annual Parent and Child Tournament was played on Sunday July 23rd in glorious sunshine. After a competitive 'round robin' stage which was won by the 2015 and 2016 tournament winners, Cameron and Richard Bolton, a Final was played. This was an extremely close set which was only won eventually in a nail-biting tiebreak by Dylan and Michael McCartney (Pictured centre with trophy below). Many thanks to those who took part and to club members who enjoyed the club picnic whilst basking in the sunshine and exciting tennis.
